H14.1104 Lecture 3 Credits
Instructor(s): Teirstein
Prerequisite: Music Theory and Composition. Open only to students in the Department of Dance.
This class will explore the history and basic elements of music as it has developed over the past millenium, with special emphasis on learning to listen in historical and cultural context. The formal development of music will serve as a way of illustrating musical essentials for dancers and choreographers. In the process, students will become acquainted with Western and world music, basic score reading, conducting, the ability to hear modulations of key and timbre, and other fundamentals. We will also look at the choreographer/composer relationship and the idea of "musical sensibility" in choreography and teaching.
